Let the landscaping begin!

Yesterday morning I woke up bright and early and headed over to the Habitat Rehab store to look for a masonry drill bit and screws so the hubster could hang the wall mounted flag we bought. I was able to get concrete screws, and a possible $7.00 fix to our screen porch door that does not want to stay closed, but no drill bit. So...I headed over to HomeDepot to get the stinkin' little bit, and walked out of there with a cart full of July Weekend Sale goodies! I found a weed wacker/ edger for $30.00 (including 2 year warranty) Exterior window washing liquid, Juniper and Italian cypress trees ($4.99 each), and a heavy duty shovel to get those dead bushes out! (29.98). We worked our sweaty butts off from about 11:30am-3:00pm just digging, digging, digging...oh wait, and.....digging. (I'm feeling it today...Ouch!!) We are NOWHERE near finished...and it's becoming more and more apparent that the previous 3 owners of this home, had NO CLUE how to plant a proper garden, instead of ripping out old stuff they would chop down a tree or bush to the ground, then cover with soil, and then just add to it creating a bug infested city of root systems. We were digging up HUGE old roots of trees that were probably there for years...Right now it looks like a huge mess, but I'm determined to have one of the nicest yards in the neighborhood. Here are some pictures of our demolition derby!

"More powerrrrrr".... (in Tim the Toolman voice and grunt)

Tearing out the overgrown elephant ear plants

small area I've started to plant...pretty Lilly of the Niles and mini Holly bushes

Soooooo....much to do :-(

Had a palm here, tried to dig it out (no luck) we are going to have to rent a little bobcat to take that sucker out!

My baby cypress' and junipers waiting to get a soaking from the approaching storm.

Hopefully we'll finish this area up today so I can level the ground, add soil and peatmoss, lay landscape fabric, and then start to plant.  So that's my goal for today, however I do have another great little idea for the 4th to share with you, and this one is inexpensive and practical. So stop by later!
